Imperial College London, one of four PNRA scholarships available in 2011

Find out about the PNRA research studentship available at Imperial College London. The project looks into state estimation in power distribution networks.

Project description

The estimation of voltage and angle in distribution network is a real challenge in the absence of enough measurement and communication between the measurement locations and control centre.  Some of the quantities are even discrete. This leads to the case to minimize an objective function which is not continuous and differentiable.

The project will involve developing algorithm for obtaining network voltage, angle and power flow in distribution feeders. It will also explore other relevant technical issues:  measurement placement and network observability.  Besides a fair knowledge of electric power system operation, modeling and analysis; basic understanding of optimization, probability and statistics will be essential.

Funding notes

This studentship is only open to UK citizens who have received, or who are due to receive, an upper second or first class degree in Electrical Engineering discipline.

This studentship is sponsored collaboratively by companies from the UK electricity supply industry sector.
